SUMMARY
Plastic recycling is a major technological challenge. Currently, only 14 percent is recycled, with 72% simply not recovered at all. Despite having an inherent value, virtually all – 95% – is simply lost after a single use. Clearly, if Europe’s ambitions for a circular economy are to become a reality, this must change dramatically. To address this challenge, the European Commission has defined a ‘European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy’. However, implementation faces some issues. A major challenge is that, in order to improve performance, packaging is becoming increasingly complex, often incorporating mixed materials that makes it difficult to recycle. The solution to this is twofold. First, to create mono-material packaging that offers the same benefits as existing, multi-material approaches, Second, to develop technologies that makes it easier to separate and sort multi-material packaging. This is what the MANDALA project aims to deliver; an innovative adhesive for multilayer products that provides sustainable solutions for addressing eco-design, dual functionality and end-of-life based on bio-based multilayer mono-material film packaging with functionalities that compete with existing films. |
